Movimento!  Early Dance and Theatre Ensemble

Movimento! re-creates the beauty and magic of dance and theatrical spectacle in Europe’s princely courts in order to present fragments of our mediaeval, renaissance and baroque heritage.

The Movimento! Ensemble makes their own costumes authentic to the period of the dance and music.

At a recent costume workshop, Movimento! Members designed and created a new Elizabethan costume.  This costume was designed by Hilary White Nunn based on a 1588  portrait of Queen Elizabeth I (attributed to George Gower).

Choosing the right fabric is an import step in the process.  This costume uses a combination of brocade inlay, silk sleeves, organza and a velvet skirt.

Students are exposed to the fashions and clothing styles of European courts.  Fashions have always played an integral role in the evolution of dance.  Performing in costumes that were the height of fashion of the various eras is sheer delight!

Performers must be prepared for a number of fittings.  The many layers of the costume are put together both for fit and to allow enough movement for dance.

Bows lining the skirt and on the shoulder rolls were popular in this period.

Our young dancer does credit to the final product!
